First I read a few reviews before buying so I had a good idea in advance of what I was going to do. I have never used the supplied plastic pellets (still in the original bags). Instead, I bought a 40 pound bag of animal pellets from my local Tractor Supply store for about $5. These pellets break down into sawdust when cats pee on them. This in turn is strained onto the bottom tray, which I scoop out with a small scoop and keep in an airtight container to empty once a week. Super easy, super clean and no bad cat ring smell. Because the upper part enters the lower part freely. I also taped top to bottom with duct tape. That way I can take the top and shake it so the sawdust trickles onto the bottom bowl. It is also a more durable/sturdy tray when glued together. I have a metal cat litter scoop because trying to move the pellets to dispose of the sawdust actually broke my cheap plastic scoop. I'm also considering removing the tray entirely and putting everything in a "pan" or something with 1" side. But that's just a thought. Either way, given the cost of a litter box, it pays for itself in a snap. We have 2 cats and have been using this for 3 weeks and still on the original $5 bag of pellets!), it tends to smell like urine so I started using Nature's Miracle deodorant and now the system seems perfect. It doesn't take much (more like tiny granules than a powder) and smells fresh. After cleaning, just spray a little and bang! Clean and fresh. Love this facility!
