The problem is that in order for the knife holder to be useful, you have to completely clean the knife before putting it back in the holder. If you clean the side of the plate and cover it with a lid, oil will fall to the bottom. So you have to put it on the top and not the bottom when you take it off to distribute the oil. It just doesn't seem very useful. If you're just looking for a place to store your butter and aren't worried about the knife area, this will do. This seems to create a good seal to protect the oil.
