This little table does what it's supposed to do, which is stand in the corner and hold some decorative mugs, but it doesn't plan on heavy use. I'm not sure what the material is, but I suspect it's somewhere between styrofoam and the type of wood Hollywood uses for detachable chairs. However, it is easy to assemble and very light. For what I need - a table that fits in a small space to store light items - it fits the bill. But just don't expect to pass this on to your children and grandchildren; I doubt it would even be beaten by a toddler or medium sized dog enthusiastically flicking its tail. So don't put it in a high traffic area of your home. Hide it in a rarely used corner and put light objects on it, like a tissue box or small toys, and everything will be fine.
