I tried using a Brunton ball and a Harbin compass socket and although it fit the slots it didn't tighten enough to snap into place as the slots were too deep. a seal that would allow the use of a ball head. Conclusion: For the money, this is a reasonably used tool. If the manufacturer had used a glass mirror (which is the compass's biggest drawback), a slightly better bullseye level and the same lateral tolerance slots as the Brunton, it would have been a big improvement.
