Wrong size: Running

I bought size 9.5 to wear for walking, hiking and maybe a light run during my Camino de Santiago trips. I usually wear a size 8.5-9. My smallest and largest toes were visible through the side fabric of the toe box because they are so small. The ankle padding was so tight it hurt even after untying the laces. These are the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever tried on.
