this camera replaced the 1.5 year old Lumix DMC-SZ1 with 10x optical zoom and 14 megapixels. The Lumix developed dark spots on the sensor that showed up in bright images, which is why it was discontinued. in comparison, the nikon is a bit thicker, but about the same length and width, which is good for a pocket camera. The display is good and the controls are simple and convenient. Image quality at maximum zoom isn't as good as the Lumix, and the Nikon's 18x rating is no better than the 10x Lumix. At a smaller zoom, the Nikon seems to have better color reproduction outdoors, but it produces an orange cast under fluorescent lighting, even when the white balance is set to Auto or Fluorescent. You can use manual white balance (or Photoshop) to improve the color. Otherwise, I'd say the macro mode (which I often use for work) is slightly better, and the overall autofocus seems faster and less finicky than Lumix. The big surprise, however, is the wide range of HD video modes - not only does it record directly to iPhone-compatible movies, but it also offers 1/2 and 1/4 slow motion recording. it also makes 2 times high speed! Low light photos are only marginally better than the Lumix, but with the Nikon you can improve quality by setting the ISO to a maximum of 400 or 800 - another great feature in my opinion. I've only had the camera 2 days so far but this is probably my 20th digital camera and I use it almost daily for work and play. If it continues to impress me I'll come back and give it 5 stars, but so far it's only gotten 4 due to the poor light and extreme resolution at high zoom levels.
