. I connected the analog outputs of the cable box to my stereo preamp but there was a hum I couldn't get rid of. He came and went, sometimes very conspicuously. Now I connect HDMI from the cable box to this thing and then to the TV and my DAC. The rumble of the earth has disappeared and the sound quality has improved significantly. I was concerned there would be problems if the digital signal coming from the HDMI cable was in surround format, but so far everything I've looked at has worked fine. The cable box has a digital audio output, but only outputs the digital audio format in which the program is located. If it's 5.1 you can't use a 2 channel DAC. The digital output on this will always output 2 digital channels when set to 2 channels.
