Usually on the rare occasions that I see a complaint about the smell of art supplies, I don't pay much attention to it as I don't have a sensitive nose and also don't notice the smell that some people do to have. But this storage box is the stinkiest product I've ever had. And I'm not exaggerating either. It's not the smell of wood. It wouldn't bother me. It's some kind of wood varnish or other sealer that has been heavily applied. Instead of waiting for the sealant to dry and cure, the manufacturer immediately put the storage box in a box and shipped it to Jerry's. Quality control was so poor that the crate that the storage box was placed in was still soaked in sealant, which looked like a grease stain on the inside of the box. This means that the box was packed right after sealing, still wet from the sealing. Because this case was made in China, there were no quality or safety procedures, that's for sure. Aside from the stench, I liked the box to store my crayons in and the wooden parts were well constructed. So I figured instead of sending it back I would just remove the dividers and foam, put some baking soda in the drawers, take them out of the case, put the baking soda in the case and let all the parts air out. At first I had a hard time removing the foam separators. According to the description, they are removable. In fact, some are and some aren't. Some of them were glued in place, and to remove them, some got stuck. I don't care since I didn't want to use separators anyway. However, this meant that I could no longer return the product. The foam was wet from the sealant. It smelled just like the case, but I could have used a different insert instead of foam rubber in a pinch. As a result, almost a week has passed and not only has the stench not gone from the suitcases, boxes or foam, but the room I'm sitting in stinks. A simple touch of the drawer's surface leaves a strong scent on my fingers. I wouldn't dare store crayons in it because they take on a strong smell, just like my office. I tried Jerry' s to see if there's anything I haven't tried to get rid of the smell. They were decidedly useless and simply told to deflate. When I said it didn't work they said to return the product which I told them I couldn't do that because I broke some spacers and threw them away. I asked what else I could try and they hung up. Excellent customer service! I already have three sets of art cabinets with these drawers and I really like them. But I bought them from Revain many years ago and they are no longer made. So what can I do to keep my growing stash of pencils going? Guess I'll have to put them in zip lock storage boxes. My husband will use these smelly boxes to store screws and other small gadgets in the garage. What a waste of money and a lot of disappointment! Shame on Jerry's for selling such junk and Revain for storing it. If I could give zero stars I would. That was about the only bad experience I've ever had when ordering from Revain. So buyers beware. Don't even think about buying that. Find an alternative to store your art supplies. Especially in times of COVID, the last thing anyone needs is something with smelly (and probably dangerous) fumes that can irritate the respiratory system.
