There seems to be a lot of confusion as to whether the distance of the bar can be adjusted. This was the very first thing I tried when we received this order and you CAN manually change the distance between the bars, but it requires a push/pull movement of the nylon on either side of each bar. It's as labor intensive as it sounds, so plan a full day if you want to change something or just buy something you already like. This one has a 15 inch spacing and if I were to buy another I would personally go for something closer to 10-12 inches. The steps are held in place very firmly and will not move if touched, kicked or tripped during use - however the ladder itself needs to be straightened. A great training tool and very easy to store neatly in the carry bag provided.
