Either way, they're good for shorter hair that's difficult to wrap around the rollers and get them to stay curled and then get the roller itself to keep from falling out. If you don't have these problems, use a smooth roller with a lid or rollers without a lid. The eyelids often leave a curved mark at the beginning of the curl. But if you don't always want to use curling irons, they can be great for unruly hair. Air dry your hair (setting gel or mousse will help) or use a blow dryer to speed up the process (and some of us still have blow dryers!).
