I used this for a simple demonstration of Young's double slit experiment using various cheap 630-650nm red lasers - the aperture is clamped in a plastic frame (3mm thick) and Gives the assembly some rigidity and stable surface for clamping/fastening. There appear to be clear covers on each side of the diaphragm that can be cleaned - I didn't disassemble the part so I'm not sure if they're melting or just there. The slits themselves are well marked and exactly match the specified gaps and stripe widths. While a bit pricey, it's done right and well worth it if you want a reliably accurate set of slots for the job.
