Review on Enhance Your Quilting and Sewing with Brother Open Toe Walking Foot SA188 by Carla Anderson

Works great when disassembled and lubed.

I have an "almost antique" Brother sewing machine, purchased in 1972. As a beginner quilter, I was advised to purchase a walking foot to help quilt thicker garments. Due to the age of my machine, I couldn't find any built-in guides to refer to when choosing a walking foot. So I rolled the dice and decided on this one. It was absolutely right. Unfortunately, after sewing some long backstitches, I noticed that the foot was bouncing. The seams were uneven, the threads were torn. Everything looked fine with the car, so I concluded that this walking leg had a problem. I carefully took it apart and found that the internal components were completely dry - they had not been oiled. There were scar marks on the metal parts, again confirming the lack of lubrication. I applied a small amount of sewing machine oil to all moving parts, paying special attention to those damaged by friction and abrasion. I then reassembled the unit and it worked just as well as the first time! Problem solved! Just a warning to anyone considering this unit - no disassembly instructions or lubrication recommendations are included with the unit. So 4 instead of 5 stars.

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Expensive
