The material is only plastic (relatively durable). However, when I opened it up, the rubber grommet/gasket had pulled out of where it should have been. I had to fix it but the rubber gasket seems to have already stretched making the fit less than perfect. The top will not close (probably due to a misaligned rubber gasket). I don't think the napkins stay fresh - either cheap construction or poor quality control. Instead, you have to use it for dry cloths or napkins.
