I love my UA Charged Rogues. So when I saw the Charged Assert 8 specs were similar (neutral pronation, high arch, heel strike) but claimed to offer more cushioning and a wider toe box and better. Reviews I've Been In! Since my UA experience with Rogue was great, I put on the Assert 8 with my regular socks and went to work for the 12 hour shift at the hospital (which I did with the Rogue, Nike Torch 4, Hoka One One Clifton and beloved NurseMates Dove did without me changing shoes weekly/monthly/quarterly depending on how my feet, legs and back are feeling). BIG FAILURE with Assert 8. Walking from car to car I noticed that the heel was rubbing my Achilles, it's ok - they're new, I'll bend them and get rid of the stiffness. Helped moderately. The size was right, the width was right. They felt good when I put them on and stood in them to check the size. However, within the first 4 hours, the skin on the lateral side of my toes (not the forefoot but the widest part) became inflamed and the upper rubbed against my ankle on dorsiflexion no matter how I adjusted the laces. About halfway through my shift, the soles of my feet regularly shone. Slight soreness was due to too much arch support, which is my number one complaint anyway, and a complete lack of cushioning compared to the Charged Rogue, even my old Cliftons had better cushioning than the Assert 8. When I got home, I cleaned and assessed my feet right away. Swollen, red, blisters, some blood on the sides of the little toes and yes, little hard black splinters of the material that makes up the insoles and tongue of these shoes! They felt like fire as I plucked them off the heel, midsole, ball of foot, some toe pads and along the ankle next to calluses. The insole squeezed the sides of my toes between it and the body of the shoe with every step I took, so the blisters on my big toes were intact and vertical, but the skin on my pinky fingers was fractured vertically and chafed to the point of tearing . bleeding. Did I need a blood transfusion, no, but still a serious design and material flaw that shouldn't have happened. I was happy to have a few days off after these shoes because I really needed ibuprofen, ice, rest and elevation. I also checked for signs of ongoing irritation and/or infection on the splinters, luckily none. I am considering contacting UA to see if they would like me to send them to them so they can be authenticated. Otherwise I send them in the trash.
