Review on 🎀 Rode Podcaster Dynamic USB Microphone by John Hattalli

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great, clear sound with no frills

I've been a podcaster since late 2005 and have had a variety of mics. I even had an Electro-Voice RE20 and recently an Electro-Voice RE320. I like this microphone better. It's so easy to get clean sound without getting the blur and raspy hiss that I had with the more expensive RE320. Just dead silence when I'm not speaking, and when I speak the audio is crisp and clear, not fuzzy or loud at all. I think you could get the same sound with the RE320 running it through a very clean and powerful interface, but that hasn't happened to me and I've tried two different preamp/mixer combos as well as the Shure X2U. Of course, I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on really good gear. It's just pure, clean and sounds great. The real test was joining another podcast and hearing how good I sound even on Skype. It sounded great. Even though I sounded good on my own records with my previous mic, it always sounded awful on others, but with this mic it just sounds good. a little. I set it to 83% and the audio sounds low when I record before setting it in Logic with my EQ and gain settings. On the other hand, the volume was perfectly normal for others when I was using it for other podcasts or just talking to people on G+ or Skype. If you're a podcaster, you could buy a lot of gear and maybe you think you want that. But that's not the case. If you don't use many inputs in your system you don't need a mixer and you don't need a Heil PR 40. All you need is a microphone and preferably a boom and shock absorber. You will not regret it.

Pros
  • Microphones
Cons
  • Mostly OK, but...
