Review on Osprey Transporter Laptop Backpack Black by Melissa Vaughn

Tough bag for all-weather commuting

This bag has a particular niche in the market, and your impression of the bag will largely depend on whether that niche is what you are need. This is not quite a hiking backpack and not quite an office backpack. This is a mix of these two genres that has its own unique advantages. I say this is not a backpack because it has its own laptop compartment and folder for documents not used in a hiking backpack. And I say that this is not an office backpack because in it functionality and durability are more important than the traditional "office" aesthetic. I would say this backpack is for those who commute to work in all weather conditions. Maybe someone who rides a bike or walks to work. (Or maybe someone who takes their laptop into the woods?) And for that purpose I'd say it's very well designed. I have several Osprey bags and this Transporter Roll Top is of the quality you would expect from this brand. It is extremely hard-wearing and weather-resistant. I pulled on all the major pressure points (handles, straps, zippers) and saw no signs of tension or weakness. This bag devours gear and begs for more. The water bottle holders in the side pockets are very cool. They hold water bottles very securely but still allow you to pull out the bottle with one hand. I was able to fit a standard bike water bottle on one side and a full size Nalgene bottle on the other, and it could probably fit even larger bottles! Aside from those two water bottles, I was able to fit a 15 inch laptop. , large suitcase with Nintendo Switch and accessories, laptop, sunglasses, spare battery, laptop power adapter and cables, and I STILL have room. Zippered pocket for direct access to the laptop. When I wear it with the chest strap and waist belt it sits very securely on my back which leads me to believe it would work well for bike commuting. I find this bag perfect. There were a few things that didn't work for me. First, the file case is very flat and narrow, probably good for holding a magazine and nothing more. Second, I'd like to see the straps fit my shoulders a bit. If you have large breasts, this can become uncomfortable. Finally, the outer material is really very shiny. I prefer a more understated style for the things I take to the office. Overall, this is a quality bag that caters to a narrow niche market. If you're on a road trip to work in the great outdoors and need something durable and functional to get you there day in, day out, then you've found your bag.

Cons
  • I have no particular complaints about it, everything is fine
