F550EXR but no GPS

My parents used it with their old Nikon Coolpix 5200 (which I'm reclaiming) so I jumped at this offer when a used one was available in the Amazon warehouse for only $77 (including taxes). The camera does wonders in low light and the photos are great for browsing the web. The camera itself is essentially the F500EXR, which can shoot RAW, 8fps (according to the website) and has bracketing modes. You can also think of it as the F550EXR without GPS. At first I was concerned that, like the test samples from dpreview.com, the camera would have a lens decentering issue. I haven't had to shoot in daylight yet, but I don't see this problem when shooting indoors/at night. (*UPDATE*: The far right and far left edges are blurry on ultra wide, but I still don't think it's an "off-center lens". It also has pincushion distortion. If you zoom to 28mm (1 ,2x) zooming in), it gets rid of most of it. But I find the leftmost/rightmost blur at 24mm pretty decent, so I won't shoot the star) EXR + BSI CMOS (better noise reduction/light collection) + doubler IS (images will be kept 1/4) really works wonders in available light and indoors, no flash. Such a shame the flash for it pops up every time you trigger it, even if you have the flash suppressed. You always have to push it back (in which case the flash button is less responsive). I wouldn't mind having one of them. My film DSLR can't take handheld shots in low light without a flash or near-instantaneous snapshot uploading. Not to mention how heavy zoom lenses are for that. It also matches my GE X5 bridge camera, but beats it in low light, screen resolution, features and size (although the GE X5 was easier to navigate and had time-lapse and an electronic viewfinder). The menus are more complicated than I'm used to as there are so many damn settings and I don't always remember there's a round wheel or function button for important settings. But this camera definitely seems smart enough for my parents to use and take good pictures with just one setting: EXR Auto. Now shoots RAW + Jpeg, but takes a little while to capture. I find this processor a bit slow as the SD card is said to be Class 10. For €77 I'm thrilled. At $149 not a bad deal and I doubt you can find a better (travel) camera at this price point unless you care about low light (no flash) or buy used. If you're paying the RRP for that, the Canon SX230/260 HS or the Nikon S8200 might be a slightly better option. 4x6 and superzoom camera, versatility, control and features in a small package. This camera won't let you down (unless it breaks, crashes or something). Lastly, in this case you may need to remove the battery and restart the camera, but this shouldn't happen often, if ever).

Pros
  • Don't waste too much time
Cons
  • Useless features
