Review on Shure WH20TQG Dynamic Headset Microphone by Tony Doan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It beats the Audio-Technica BPHS1

I'm by no means an audiophile or an expert. But I needed something to replace my MXL USB.006 mic. Don't get me wrong, I've had the MXL for years and love it. Except that it picks up too much ambient noise. It's not his fault, he's just doing what he's supposed to do. I record quite a bit for YouTube for technical training/materials. And the MXL picked up every buzz and chime of ambient noise. So I decided to try the Audio-Technica BPHS1 Broadcast Stereo Headset. And it was a great mic/headphone. Although headphones would be overkill for me, I could use them. As an engineer, I naturally decided to do a test. I set up the sound pressure meter and read the same paragraph twice. I follow the SPL to level the situation as much as possible. I also had a slot machine running 3 feet away with the fan full and 3 room fans 6 feet behind me. The ambient noise was enough to record it. Surprisingly, my everyday Plantronics C720 did the job just fine. The MXL sounded *great* but, as expected, picked up too much ambient noise. Audio Technica has also done a great job. But I felt the Shure unit performed best in terms of sonic warmth while blocking out ambient noise. I might not pass the double-blind test between Audio Technica and Shure, but the superfluous headphones and the additional costs for the AT device made this decision easy for me. Just in case, I hooked it up to a Steinberg UR12 USB audio interface and it works great. I highly recommend him and this Shure microphone.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Almost never

Disappointing performance, worse manufacturer support. Poor choice for onstage vocals.
