I had a 2011 Epic that was a rocket. Remake 2x10 to 1x10 years ago. I ended up trying an all black 34T sprocket. (5+ years ago). I was surprised at the lack of fatigue and how much more I was able to ride. I've never dropped a chain, no chain guide, just a Sram X9 rear derailleur with clutch. I've seen friends with chain guides drop chains left and right over rubble and rock gardens, but I just keep going with no issues. Fast forward to 2021, I bought a 21 Epic Evo with Sram Eagle XO1 1x12 and sold my Epic. . I did this for about a month before giving up and buying an all black oval chain. (32T). It's been a few months now and I'm very happy with the necklace. I have a great SRAM chain in my workshop that will most likely never be used again.
