Experts agree that since recovery attempts yielded no results, the disk likely has faulty sectors near its beginning, or that one of its read-write heads has degraded. Therefore, you should not assume that the data will be retrievable if the disk is suddenly covered. Who cares, but I don't think such risks are reasonable, and I certainly won't be buying any more of that garbage.
