Noise at Low Levels: Accessories and Supplies

I got this to go from headphones (they don't have a built in cable) to my iPhone. The length was perfect, but there was a constant static hiss at any volume. When the music was loud enough (3/4+ max volume) I couldn't hear the hiss, but at low levels the hiss was louder than the music. The music had to be louder than I like to kill the hiss. I replaced the first one I bought with the second one but the same thing happened. I don't know what's causing the hiss but it's too much for me to work with.
