I've spent over 10 hours downloading software patches, uninstalling software, adding software and rebooting, all to no avail. None of the scans completed successfully. My system is a well-maintained Dell Dimension running Windows XP-Home with 512MB of memory and a 100GB hard drive that is less than 25% full. I use Norton Systems Works, Corel Paint Shop Pro X and Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 8 with no problems. In March 2006 I installed an HP Photosmart 8250 printer which has worked and continues to work well with no problems. HP Scanner Customer Support responds quickly to my email and offers solutions. But even if they eventually offer a working solution, that doesn't make up for the real torture for the time being. I find it incredible that HP offers their scanners with such bad software. I doubt I will ever buy an HP computer product again!
