It is not soft like a blanket and does not bend like a yoga mat. Imagine a smooth surface and a hard surface, like a thin piece of cardboard. It will flex, but you can see that it keeps its shape when folded in the package. It can only be used on a flat, hard surface because when your puppy steps on it, the edges will lift up due to its stiffness if it is under something soft (e.g. a carpet). Sometimes their hind legs will also cling and then fold over the edge. 2 stars because it will probably wear out over time but honestly it's no different than your pup lying on a cool tile floor because it doesn't offer a cushion. Just not what I expected
