Doesn't work on XP

I spent more than three (3) hours setting up this printer for Windows XP, SP3. The installation disk didn't work because the motherboard/USB drivers didn't work properly. I'm not sure if this is a problem with my computer or with your software. Never mind - most printers can be installed on this machine which I keep in excellent condition. I called HP support and an overseas tech support rep did the same as me. Then he solved the setup problem (partially) by manually setting the printer as a Deskjet 990c printer. Unfortunately, the wizard for finding new hardware appeared when restarting. I exited it, started again and the new hardware wizard reappeared. This time I went through the same steps as the HP support rep and manually set up the printer as an HP 990c Deskjet. This made the printer work with this 990c driver. So I can print in black/white/color but none of the software packages are available on the installation CD. I wouldn't use any of these programs, but basically this printer couldn't be installed on my computer. We found a workaround, but I'm not happy with it. Luckily I only need a black color desktop inkjet printer so I should be fine. But this printer was not installed properly and barely works on my XP SP3 computer. Get the best model! UPDATE 6-23-12: After some thought, my best guess is that while the printer says XP compatible on the box, it actually isn't XP compatible. And that's because the printer uses hardware drivers that didn't exist when XP machines were commonplace. Now all new machines have Windows 7, 8 or higher. So technically you can take one of these new machines, install XP on it somehow, and the printer will install since the processor motherboard has the latest hardware and drivers. However, to say that this printer is XP compatible is mostly a lie I think. I don't think there is an XP computer that can install this printer - it uses newer drivers. Don't buy for XP. Period.
