I like that this unit is completely sealed. Not only the shells (2), but also the cord, which is surrounded by coiled metal to prevent it from being crushed and bitten by animals. The beautiful stainless steel bowls are removable for cleaning, and there is heavy plastic under and around the hole that holds the bowls, which heats up to prevent the food/water from freezing. Our Wisconsin weather was below freezing last week and yet the dish was warm enough to keep the meal warm. It will NOT get too hot. Just a little warm. The only improvement I would like is the cord, which could be a foot or so longer. It doesn't quite reach the capacity I want to use. I love it.
