You don't need any tools to put them together but they are poorly finished so it takes a lot of strength to turn the parts. The support sections between each flat surface and the ground are made of cheap plastic and require a lot of force to connect. There are 32 screws in total, so you'll likely be exhausted long before you're done. no resistance at all. why couldn't the other parts?! Took me about 20-30 minutes to put both pieces together so it's not a big deal as all you really do is screw things in. One of the flat surfaces has been damaged from screwing in plastic, which sucks. I have a feeling this shouldn't have happened. The styrofoam it's packaged in is a cheap, brittle material that will fall apart, leaving you pulling out bits that the stuff is sticking to. Although the part itself looks quite nice. So despite what I said about him, I still gave him five stars. But I bought it on Black Friday/Cyber Monday for about $35. So I'm not sure what my guess would be for list prices that are in the 50-100 range.
