I like them turning on at night. Green and blue are good. You need a module to connect them as they draw very little power. The module is plugged into any socket, and then lamps are connected to the module. The wires are quite long so they can be placed at the top or bottom of the aquarium and there are suction cups to keep them in place. Leaving them on non-stop will collect algae that will dim the light - you just need to wipe the bulbs from time to time to keep them clean.
