The chain was exactly the length I ordered but remember the clasp has a 2 inch extension that you can adjust to. At its widest position, the necklace sat around the base of my neck, but unless I positioned it perfectly, it would often roll and move, which wasn't what I wanted. For a thicker chain, I'll probably need a longer length to fit well. In terms of styling, I found the advertised images to be a bit misleading as the chain links are not that flat. It may also have contributed to the above problem. I sent the item back, so I can't comment on durability.
