I use it as a video cable for LG Electronics 4K Monitor 42.5 inch LED Backlit Screen (43UD79-B) for my Macbook Pro with Touch Bar . Is working. very good. Note that you don't need a USB-C cable if you want to control the Apple 5K model (although they share the same connector). There seems to be 3 types: charging, data and Thunderbolt3 video. That's a lot of data. It should work with external hard drives too. By the way, don't try to look for longer cables, the USB-C standard limits them to 1m. The charging type can be longer, but it's not good for data or videos. If you need longer videos, you'll need to get something like an HDMI converter.
