We have replaced single use plastic bags at our school with biodegradable and compostable plastics, although in landfill these bags still take a long time to decompose (1 to 5 years) , they are a much better alternative to synthetic plastics that can last over 100 years. In a commercial composting facility, decomposition times approach 28 days, which is fantastic, but some of these bags end up in landfill. In the end, it's best to consciously reduce the use of plastic wherever possible.
