We used special hooks that my scratching post already had, so I can't confirm how the suction cups work. We added some of our catnip for the kitty to appreciate and love. If we can't figure out where the cat is, we look in the hammock and he's always there, he likes it. I don't usually have much luck with the stuff I buy for my cats so I'm very happy. money well spent. My older cats don't care, but they also have their own set up. For a kitten, I think it's a wonderful purchase.
