Review on Blackmagic Design Video Assist Monitor Camera & Photo by Matthew Miles

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great video monitor and external recorder, but clunky

After weeks of thinking about getting an Atomos or this monitor for HD video surveillance and recording for a camera and separate microphone, I settled on this one Model which was a bit more expensive due to the many features, and of course it would be nice to have a 4K option, but I still have no plans to upgrade the rest of my gear from 1080p to 4K in the next few years. . that's it! The 7 inch screen size is perfect for seeing focus and even fine details e.g. B. when some hairs are out of place. The video features like zebra crossing, cross hairs etc all work great and are very sharp and clear in real time The menus are intuitive and simple and the whole touch interface is well thought out The SD card recording is suitable for working in HD format and you get some good, fast SD cards for a small price. In my experience, after an hour or two of recording, I still couldn't hear the fan running in the background. It was the fear I had with this unit that the fan would be loud enough to be heard on the recording, but at least indoors, in an air conditioned environment (76°F), the fan either never came on or was very quietly. I have a problem, there doesn't seem to be a way to set the recording of a mono audio channel both left and right in the recorded file, so I have to switch the left channel audio to mono in post, which is just annoying ( but not bad). 2 lbs so make sure you have a sturdy tripod (I bought a Manfrotto PIXI EVO for desktop use) to hold it.

Pros
  • Videostudio
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
