It's a thick white cream. Rubbing takes time, and even then, children's skin turns a little white. However, we like it as an indicator that they are protected. My 6 year old granddaughter has blonde hair, blue eyes and very fair skin. It burns easily. However, this material protected her (and her siblings. And me) all week on vacation in the sun, in the heat, on the boat, lake swimming and pool. This is good stuff. Excellent protection. A little difficult to wash off in the shower afterwards, but who cares? It does an excellent job of protecting the skin.
