Review on ๐Ÿšฒ Thule Yepp Maxi: Rack Mount Child Bike Seat - Safe & Secure Riding Experience by Mark Sutovsky

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The Daily Rider is here. LOVE this seat!

I live in Seattle where a lot of families ride bikes with their kids and this seat is the BEST I need. You see them all over town. When I found a bunch of these at the Revain warehouse I grabbed them even though I didn't have a bike to put them on :) I've since fitted an Xtracycle Free Radical to the back of my hybrid bike. and sit on it. I bought the Flightdeck 2 specifically for my Free Radical because it has built-in Easyfit windows: it saved me from having to pay another $30 for an Easyfit adapter, and the seat is a few inches lower (right on deck , not above). . adapter), which is a bit more stable. It took me a minute to realize that I needed to cut out the Easyfit window from the Flightdeck 2. There are indentations on the bottom to indicate where to cut so it was pretty easy. After that, securely installing the Yepp Maxi Easyfit was a breeze. The included lock is a nice feature so I can just lock my bike when I leave the house and not worry about someone walking with the seat. I drive my almost 3-year-old child every day when there is no school. She weighs about 35 pounds. She is comfortable and snug in the seat with plenty of room to grow. She LOVES it and asks for a bike ride. I found that the shoulder straps had a tendency to slip off her shoulders, but adjusting the straps to their maximum position and tying the ends of the straps together to form a "chest strap" of sorts completely solved this problem. It took some getting used to having his weight back there as it makes the bike a bit more unstable, especially in tight corners, but we haven't had any crashes yet. My friends who have thrown their bikes with kids on board (hey, that happens!) say the seat does an amazing job of encasing the passenger and preventing injury. Luggage racks, and these fit perfectly in front of the seat, one on each side. Now I have Xtracycle X1 Freeloader bags and they work too. You probably won't be able to place baskets/bags on a regular luggage rack with the seat installed. Also, the Xtracycle X2 bags don't go well with this seat. The material is soft and rubbery, very comfortable for a child, but also great for rainy Seattle weather as it repels water better than fabric. We also have the Bobike Mini front end. Burley seat and trailer. The front seat is my absolute favorite for a young child as it's fun to point and talk to and has little to no effect on bike handling. Unfortunately my 3 year old outgrew him a few months ago so it's now either the Yepp Maxi or the Trailer. I usually prefer Yepp Maxi; While it does affect the handling of the bike and isn't as great for a conversation as it is in the front seat, it's pretty good. On very cold or rainy days a caravan is my choice because I can wrap my daughter in a blanket and know she is protected from the weather. If I had to choose just one of these three options for transporting a child on a bike, it would probably be the Yepp Maxi. It lasts longer than a front seat and is more fun than a trailer on all but the coldest and rainiest days. (And on the coldest, wettest days, a toddler's JJ Cole Bundle Me fits very nicely in this seat!) If you have a compatible bike/rack, I highly recommend this seat! (If you don't have a compatible bike/rack, try the Yepp Maxi version without Easyfit.)
