Works good but smells awful

I bought this because I'm pregnant and need a knee pad. That thing smells terribly and rubs on everything it touches. I ended up throwing it in the washing machine (after sitting in the garage for a week). It still smelled bad but after washing it got a lot better. The smell fades slowly, but I'm better at hiding it under the covers and I never let my bare skin touch it. But as a knee pad I think it's great, I'm wondering if I should have tried to find a bigger one or if it has softened a bit after washing.
