Review on Sony Ubp X800M2 Blu Ray Disc Player by James Dominick

Unreliable - frequent crashes

This player crashes at least every three or four discs. By catastrophic I mean the player freezes and becomes completely numb. It doesn't even hear the power or eject buttons on the front. The only "fix" is to pull the power from the power strip. Going back to the same place in your content after reconnecting is the worst annoyance you can imagine. Discs, both Blu-Ray and DVD, played flawlessly on my previous player (OPPO BDP-83) and are clean and well maintained; So if the freezing is disc related in any way, it means this new player is less reliable than the technology from a decade ago. After the first couple of freezes I did a factory reset like the Sony site recommends, but on the next disc the player freezes again. And when I first set up this player, I dutifully updated the firmware to the latest M45.R.0050 (released May 7th, 2019), so all these experiences were made with this latest firmware. As an electronics designer, I believe this is most likely a firmware issue that Sony doesn't seem to be in any hurry to fix. Great specs and fantastic picture quality but in terms of reliability this player is by far the worst home cinema/stereo product I have ever owned. Unless they release firmware newer than M45.R.0050, don't buy it, and even then keep an eye out.

Pros
  • Hear more details with Hi-Res audio, Dolby Atmos and DSEE HX
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
