Battery corrosion in new product lighting

One of the two batteries was badly rusted in each candle for 6 months, rarely used. Bought late 2020. We have used the candles a few times indoors and once outdoors on a table in a covered patio (no rain or liquid exposure) for accent table lighting. It looked great. Use new Rayovac alkaline batteries from the multipack. Other batteries in the same pack work great in remote controls and other devices like blood pressure monitors. The polarity of the battery was correct for the candles. Strangely, as far as I could see, only one battery in each spark plug was corroded. After the first few uses, the candles hadn't been used in the canteen for months, and then when I unscrewed the bottom to light one, battery acid ran down my son's hand. He's 17 so he knew he needed to wash up immediately and we applied a paste of baking soda and water which seemed to prevent further burns. The candle still worked, although one battery was badly corroded and leaking liquid. Again, they were never used in the rain or stood in water or anything like that. dry conditions. I've been using cordless devices since 1977 and have never seen liquid drip from a battery powered device. Usually you will find dry, crusted, rusty batteries. But these were wet. I've been using waterproof flashlights for years and have never seen batteries do this. I threw the candles in the trash without taking a photo to post. Condensation may have formed in the sealed battery compartment. I can't recall candle LEDs ever being warm enough to form condensation on cooling. I don't know, I'm just guessing. They sat in the dining room for months, normal temperature and humidity. It doesn't look like a medium for condensation to form. Wouldn't recommend it. The next set we try won't be the sealed waterproof version.
