The whole point of a monitor is that you have to look at it and read it. Unfortunately, even on the lowest settings, it's too bright to look at, let alone read. The problem is not unique to this monitor. There are software tools that can dim monitors even further than the settings allow, but they're not perfect. I'm using one right now. There are hardware options like privacy screens, but they're expensive and hard to find. I tried draping it with fabric but the weaving was distracting. PS This is an important question. Too many monitors are too bright to view without purchasing special tools. I don't understand the hostility and denials for someone who mentioned the issue. It may not really affect everyone, but it will affect some of us.
