Started using it more often. When I noticed the problem, I followed the exact same steps to compare the OEM cable and this one. When using this cable, my iWatch 5 gets warm during and after charging. I tried this when the watch was about 1/2 charged and fully discharged. I did the same with the other two cables that came with the iWatch 5 and iWatch 4. Through the same test, the iWatch never got as hot as it did when in use. this cable (really very thin). This connected directly to the watch with the watch on top of the adapter and used its own weight to ensure a strong connection on a flat surface.
