This isn't a "hardcore" bag - eg I wouldn't survive my laptop in it without first putting it in a bag, and I wouldn't want to carry it around all day on a hike or something like that. so because the straps are just canvas, no padding. The price doesn't bite - I paid more for less and it's a pretty durable canvas. BUT. For short term carry and lighter stuff this bag is great and I love the way it looks. It's roomy, has a few extra pockets, and if you need your hands a little free, yes, you can wear it as a backpack. It also closes with a zip, which is very important considering that this bag has no structure. It's definitely a great carry-on bag when flying on a budget flight when you're only allowed one 'personal item' in the cabin - you fit a lot of things in it and still fit under the seat in front of you. It can double as a beach bag and you can carry it as a backpack if you have luggage on hand, so it's actually one less thing.
