My shaving mug broke after a few years and a new mug needs a longer handled shaving brush. Not only does it have a longer and thicker handle than my previous brush, it also has longer bristles. The bristles are denser than my other brushes, which makes applying the soap more precise. The shaving brush smells when it first gets wet (the "wet dog" smell of pet hair shaving brushes), but the smell will dissipate after a week or two. I believe another review has instructions on how to get rid of the smell but I've just decided to live with a wet dog for a few weeks. As for the holder, I was able to use the Musco stand I bought from Revain a year ago. They don't quite fit together stylistically, but nobody sees that except me.
