Light, strong and fast - almost perfect. Almost

I found out after seeing G-Drive ev RaW at the Blackmagic Design conference in Chicago. We had the opportunity to work with them there and check the build quality so I knew what I was getting. It's almost identical to LaCie's rugged hard drive systems, but weighs about 1/3 the weight. The trade-off is that you get an SSD in a hard plastic case instead of aluminum, but the G-Technology version's bumper system offers more cushioning. In my case, the lower weight is worth it. My drive came pre-formatted as HFS+/OSX Indexed, which was annoying as I had to reformat it through my Mac (I mostly use a Windows system). If they came pre-formatted as exFAT it would make life easier. Also, it's 2018 - let's look at the new USB-C connector instead of USB-3. Had it been properly formatted from the factory and shipped with a modern port, I would have given it 5 stars. However, it works as advertised. I can upload high bitrate video to it and edit it with DaVinci Resolve without lag. File transfers are fast and accurate, and I haven't had any reliability issues so far. As mentioned above, the body feels solid enough and the bumper system is one of the best I've seen. Also a small but important point is that there is a small glowing logo on the front of the drive to let you know the device is powered and connected, which is what I want my LaCie drives to be. It's a nice touch.
