They are a must have for the home office, in fact I wonder why office chair manufacturers don't make this a standard. To be realistic you will not have a chair. You can roll it on carpeted floors, but you can actually roll on medium pile carpets (rolls very well on low pile carpets too). They do not damage hard floors like traditional plastic wheels. I expect they will pick up sand over time, but they are less likely to damage than stock plastic wheels. I don't recommend taking my office chair to the skate park, but they make the chair less of a nuisance on the carpet.
