Review on Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock - with Integrated Thunderbolt Cable, 40 Gbps, Dual 4K Support, USB 3.1 Gen 1, Gigabit Ethernet by Michael Nastanovich

Revainrating 1 out of 5

I gave you my heart and you had to burn me

TLDR: The dock's performance degrades over time due to overheating, causing both monitors to stop working and the USB port to become unstable. I had to cool it down with a Corsair 120mm fan hahaha to keep the dock from glitching. Like it or not, we live in a world of keys. Many of us use Apple products. On the one hand, Apple has relieved itself of the responsibility of developing a diverse range of connectivity for its laptops. No more trying to guess how much from a specific port. We only get USB Type-C ports that support Thunderbolt and USB. But that means you and I now need to find quality docking stations and hubs that give us enough ports. I originally gave this docking station a 5 star rating. The reason is that El Gato made a product that did what it said it would do. You can connect two monitors, ethernet and USB and everything will work. This is important because the market is saturated, SATISFIED, with junk that takes all of that but at a fraction of the cost. How Much Time Have You Spent With Junk Peripherals? Not much use for you to move forward. A lot of? Raise the bench and let's cry on each other's shoulders or complain together from afar. I changed my rating to 1 star because the dock overheats for 10-12 hours with daily use. As the dock warmed up, my wireless mouse began to behave erratically. I switched to a wired mouse to deal with this. As the dock gets even hotter, my external monitors start flickering at random intervals, the screen goes black with clown puke and then comes back. Using discrete USB-C dongles for HDMI-validated monitors is fine, but yes, now two out of four ports are dedicated to monitors. Now add charger, mouse, external webcam, USB audio and ethernet, yeah, not enough ports. I have to buy a property in Keytown. So I think this dock is great for construction sites that need to open a shop for a short time. From my experience, this is not a daily dock.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
