My 16 year old cat has solved the problem of avoiding the toilet

I love this food. My 16 year old cat defecated outside of her litter box quite often. Every week she hit the floor at least once. If I upset her by going out of town, she would do so 3-4 whole days in a row during and after my absence. This no longer happens with Royal Canin Indoor Mature dry food. I adopted my cat when I was 9 years old and she lived with my parents until I graduated from college. They took care of their litter box problems for 15 years and we always assumed that their problems were behavioral and we just needed to take care of that. However, once I brought them in, I quickly realized how frustrating it can be to clean up all that poop. Not to mention how embarrassing it was when my roommate found her messy. I did extensive research on litter avoidance and found that my poor kitten was showing the classic signs of litter avoidance due to pain. Her stool was very dry and she didn't seem to have a regular schedule when walking. I was worried about constipation and immediately decided to switch to healthier foods. I gradually switched her from IAMS to Royal Canin Indoor Adult food. As her food changed, so did her behavior. Her toilet visits became much less frequent and her stool consistency became more normal. She started pooping almost every day and not every 2-3 days. Now she even buries about 50% of her bowel movements. She had never buried them. The real test came in the last few weeks. I have traveled extensively and have been away for the past 2 weekends. Normally, the stress of being away and having to deal with a nanny would cause my cat to constantly avoid the box. Instead, she diligently went to the pits every day before, during, and after my weekend trips. Currently it's about 1 part IAMS to 6 parts Royal Canin. I can't wait for her to give up on IAMS completely! One thing to keep in mind is that it is very important to transition smoothly from one product to another. I foolishly tried to get her from IAMS straight to Royal Canin and she had diarrhea for a few days because of it. As soon as I started passing it gradually, the diarrhea went away.
