We have 12 6", 12 8" and 12 10" plates. As others have said, they will "scratch". The scratches seem to be caused by the matte finish, which looks like very fine metal utensil sandpaper; Add that they are matte black, it shows more. Cleaning the plates with tape seems to remove the "scratches" (although the dishwasher doesn't remove them). In terms of size, we most often use 8-inch cymbals. 6 inch plates are too small for more than appetizers (but you can use them under the plate too). 10" is the standard size for plates - we rarely eat that much at once. However, eight is almost perfect for most dishes. We also picked up 12 Danmers 20oz cereal bowls and 12 Bruntmor 8oz dessert bowls which go really well together to create a complete matte black dinnerware set for everyday use (previously we mostly used plastic).
