What I like about it is that it works with smaller mugs that large (portable) vacuum mugs won't fit in. Without the lid, the drink keeps from hot to warm for over an hour. With the lid closed, the contents stay hot for more than 2 hours. Another advantage is that you won't burn your hands if you hold it without a handle. While the contents inside stay hot, the outside is never more than warm. I absolutely love these mugs. I will never buy ceramics again. UPDATE: To be a bit more specific on the temp - I like to walk at least 5 miles every morning and carry one around for coffee. The only time I stay is when there's 0.35 degree lightning here, and using a lid keeps my coffee HOT halfway through (I fill up halfway). it cools much faster) over 2.5 miles. I love her!
