I really liked this bead mat and it is very good. In any case, there is a kind of magic wand that holds everything in place. I did have a slight odor as other reviewers have mentioned, but I find it fairly mild and not overpowering at all. Unfortunately there are spots on my bead mat (generally quite small but still present) where air bubbles appear to be trapped. get caught in the mat material during production and are more squishy than the rest of the mat.
