I bought these for two reasons. 1) Indoor use and 2) Outdoor use through a window. These cameras were mostly easy to set up, but there were problems. Packaging: Camera packaging is what you would expect from many products these days (thanks to Apple for setting the standard). The box feels premium and everything else has a nice quality feel to it. Easy to open. Setup: The instructions are pretty simple and straightforward. The problem I had was creating my account which is required to use the cameras and connect them to WiFi. There are two ways to create an account on Yi. 1) Register with email and 2) Login with Facebook. I tried to register via email and didn't receive a confirmation email. I checked the SPAM/Junk folder, Trash, and every possible location the email might be. I've gone through this process twice and selected "Resend verification email" multiple times. The e-mail did not arrive even after a few days. I ended up using Facebook, which I really didn't want to do, but I didn't have a choice about using the cameras. Once an account has been created, the steps to connect the cameras to the app and eventually to the WiFi are not as easy as they should be. I think the guide was written for a previous version of the app. I was able to figure it out, but I think someone less tech savvy might have some issues. Inaccurate description: The item description states that SD cards are accepted. For this reason I also ordered SD cards. When I opened the cameras, they accepted micro SD cards. When ordering these cameras, please make sure you order Micro SD cards. I don't recall seeing any performance specs for these cameras either, but be aware they are USB power cords with a wall outlet adapter. I really like this because it means you should be able to use a good quality USB hub designed for charging devices to power multiple cameras and maybe even buy longer cables since you need micro USB cable. I only mention this because the description doesn't seem to go into these details. I think it makes the cameras even better. Night Vision: The night vision is pretty good. I am very impressed with the night vision image quality. These cameras use IR (infrared) light to create night vision images. Essentially, they emit IR light that's invisible to the human eye, and that IR light behaves like a street light, except we can't see it. When the camera automatically switches to night mode, it switches to IR recording only. This is a really cool trick that causes the problem described below. The problem with the IR night vision: I would like to start by saying that this is not the fault of the camera manufacturer, but simply an unfortunate by-product of the technology (which is in widespread use). used on WiFi cameras and many brands). If you're planning on pointing them out the window to film outdoors, there's one caveat to keep in mind. Everything is fine during the day if you point them through the window to shoot in the street. The problem occurs when the sun goes down and night vision turns on. Glass is reflective, and while we can't see IR, IR is still light. The IR light emitted by the cameras bounces off the glass and is picked up by the camera. They don't work for me at night when aimed through the window. The only images captured are the rings of individual IR lamps falling on the window pane. Again, this is just an unfortunate by-product of the technology Yi uses. Yi doesn't list this as a default application for its products, but I'm sure I'm not the only person who would want to install them indoors for outdoor shooting. So be aware of the limitations when making your purchasing decision. Motion Detection: This is a big problem for me. At night when night mode is on, I get motion detection alerts every 10 minutes. Works almost like clockwork. There is nothing in the footage that shows a person, animal, bullets, or anything else that anyone would consider supernatural, or any movement. When night vision is on my cameras seem to think something is moving 100% of the time and the alerts never stop. When I look at the footage, it's just a still image with no movement. Are they good for indoor use during the day? Absolutely! Is it great for shooting outdoors through a window during the day? Yes! Are they good for indoor use at night? I would say absolutely about the picture quality. Are they great for taking pictures outside through a window at night? No, but most Wi-Fi cameras don't do this anyway. If you buy them for indoor use, both day and night, you will most likely be satisfied. The product description doesn't lie. They make no claims about some of the problems I'm having. If you buy them hoping to do more with them, you may be disappointed. In my case, I wanted the cameras to do A, B, and C and hoped I could do X, Y, and Z as well. Well, I can't do X, Y and Z, but they never said I was all I could anyway. Just think of the limits if you plan to use them. The description is mostly correct, except for the SD card issue, but they don't give you many features beyond the basics listed. Overall they still do the basic things I wanted them to do, even if they don't do what I really wanted them to do (warn me about real movement and take night shots of the street through the window).
