Pretty if you don't look closely

These 'cast iron' leaf stands are the first items I ordered from DII and were disappointing. The coasters look nice from a distance, but a closer look reveals defects. These coasters are NOT cast iron; they are made of lightly gilded metal. The gilding is beautifully shiny, but the rubber pins on the bottom are problematic. After removing the tissue paper surrounding each coaster, I noticed that the paper was stuck to the rubber pins and the pins had a strong chemical odor. Apparently these coasters were wrapped while still damp, making it impossible to remove the tissue paper stuck to the pins (see photo). Luckily the smell has dissipated but the rubber pins were a little sticky and stuck to my tablecloth. Aside from the rubber stylus issue, the handling of the leaf details was sloppy. There are sharp, jagged areas of metal within the leaf structure; they had to be smoothed before gilding (see photo). Sloppy edges are only noticeable on close inspection, but such poor workmanship should have been found at the factory. Due to the issues described above, I do not recommend these DII stands.
